More Sours, Please: The versatility of gin in classic sour cocktails

Today, we’re diving into the world of classic sour cocktails and exploring gin’s versatile role in these timeless cocktails. From the iconic Gin Sour to lesser-known gems, gin brings its unique botanical profile to elevate these drinks to new heights of flavour and sophistication.

The Story of Gin

With its botanical complexity and storied past, gin has long been a staple in the world of mixology. Its origins trace back to 17th-century Netherlands, where it was initially crafted for medicinal purposes. However, it wasn’t long before its appeal transcended apothecaries, finding its way into the glasses of socialites and seafarers alike.

Fast-forward to the 19th century, and we witness the emergence of sour cocktails, a category characterised by the balance of sweet, sour, and spirit. Among these classics, the Gin Sour reigns supreme. Simple yet sophisticated, its velvety texture dances on the palate.

At Patient Wolf, we pay homage to this history with our meticulously crafted gin, distilled with native Australian botanicals for a truly unique flavour profile.

The Gin Sour: A Timeless Classic

The quintessential Gin Sour cocktail is a true crowd-pleaser, balancing the juniper-forward notes of gin with the bright acidity of fresh lemon juice and the subtle sweetness of the simple syrup. The Versatility of Gin

What makes gin such a perfect base spirit for sour cocktails? It all comes down to its unique botanical profile. Unlike other spirits like vodka or rum, which are relatively neutral in flavour, gin is infused with various botanicals, including juniper, coriander, citrus peel, and more. This complex flavour profile adds depth and character to cocktails, making them more interesting and dynamic.

Whether you prefer our Melbourne Dry gin with its classic juniper-forward flavour or our more contemporary Summer Thyme Gin with botanicals like lemon and thyme. We’ve got you covered for cocktails next dinner party!
